Perfect Planning

I’m back! Here to document my planning for the portfolio project! Planning is vital, as one may so obviously know, so, I decided to write out a potential schedule that I’ll follow here! From previous projects, like the foley and music video project, I learned that film takes time…. a lot of time. The effort, consistency, time, and will that one must put towards filming something is grand. Like I’ve stated before, this class has given me my first projects that I am, genuinely, beyond excited to accomplish. Soon, I’ll storyboard and be ready to capture the image that lies in my head.

Brainless Babe requires a main model, makeup artists, hairstylists, a school, and photographers. At first, I thought of filming an actual shoot that I’ll be at, March 6-9. But I realized that may be a little overwhelming for the people on set because that whole trip, which I’ll be out of town for, I’ll be modeling from dawn to dusk since I need a lot of looks in just two full days.

Since all problems have a solution, I figured out a better idea to film the opening. I just recently had a photoshoot at the studio I always go to; Face2Face. I decided that it’d be more ideal, and more relaxing, if I were to rent out the studio for a couple hours and have some of my friends be the extras that I need. They were all okay with helping me out that day! So, the weekend after I come back, I’ll rent the studio and we get to filming so I have enough time to edit it well!

For now, I’ll continue blogging four times a week to develop ideas for the film opening. See you next week!

An All In One Film!

Brainless Babe is an all in one film. Let me elaborate:

Brainless Babe is a coming-of-age film that entails romance, drama, suspense, and more, all while reminding you of some of the most iconic late 90s/2000s chic films. Before I go on to discuss the genre, here are some of my favorite 2000s films:

I recommend watching these if you're the type to love girly Coming-of-Age movies.

Now, what is Coming-of-Age?

Coming-of-Age is not necessarily a genre alone. At times, it feels like a theme. All films within this category usually rely on one focus, one character. This character's growth, from childhood to adulthood, is shown. The story depends on whether it's a love story, news story, or anything of the sort; therefore, specifying the genre. Coming-of-Age films create a lot emotional response within characters and it's visible through the use of dialogue. Often, the films don't rely on action.

Values that are portrayed in coming-of-age films consist of morality, self-awareness, responsibility, growth, etc. Several life lessons are learned from these movies. An example is from the film Perks of being a Wallflower, "Things change. Life goes on. With or without certain people;" this lesson was derived by author Zara Komora in The Daily Clog blog. She has a couple other examples if you'd like to read some more!

More recent coming-of-age films are less "feel good" than what I'm going for; that is why I chose these 6 movies above as inspiration. In Brainless Babe, the young model would be facing a life-changing experience. Something so monumental that she when she's grown into adulthood, other young models look up to her for changing the stereotype.

We Parted Ways...

We parted ways..

My partners and I decided to split up. As discussed in the last post, we ran into some altercations with what we each wanted to film. I had my separate idea, therefore I am now working individually while Clara and Olivia are going to work together because they both had a more cinematic desire for their film opening; I want mine to feel very 90s/00s.

So, I am in fact going to produce Brainless Babe (well, just the first two minutes :P)! I originally told Olivia that I would be down to produce a psychological thriller with her. However, after watching Andrew Stanton's TED Talk and Sophie Diebold's project from a few years back, I decided I must take my own route. With respect, we discussed that it would be best to go based off of what we know. I, as a model, know about the fashion industry and I know how brutal reporters could get for the public to see. Olivia, on the other hand, knows a lot about thrillers, and she loves to act; in all honesty, I don't, it isn't my thing. Reason being I would star in Brainless Babe by doing my real life job, and she would get to star in her thriller.

Referring back to Stanton's TED Talk, I believe that going based off of what I already know, will not only benefit my project, but also in the long run as I will attend fashion school, Parsons School of Design, in New York City and, if allowed, I could put my project in my portfolio. I've always wanted to produce something similar to what I have planned for the Cambridge Portfolio.

Anyway, talk tomorrow!

Well That Was Fast!

Sooooo.... here I am again, well decided on what I want to do for my film opening. However, I didn't advance with my partners. Two of us want different genres, the third doesn't care what we end up doing as she trusts us both (YAY), but they both like mine a lot, so tonight we'll decide what we are going to go with for sure. My idea was a film about a model breaking the stereotype that we "have no brains behind the matter."

Here's my idea (rough draft):

Brainless Babe; a coming of age, drama set in the 1990s.

All while heartfelt music is playing, the opening scene is the model (myself) getting hair and makeup done. Different angles are shot to capture the detail of my look. The scene then transitions to the model being photographed and she's posing in different outfits while the flash goes off (the transition is the white camera flash); this will be edited in jump cuts. Then the photographers on set would say "Alright that's a wrap" and the last flash would go off, transitioning to the model at school (the music would cut as the photographer says that and the school bell rings). At school, an over the shoulder shot gets the model, now known student, opening her book/binder to a cover of a newspaper (sort of used like a book cover as she walks around with it for motivation) with the headline in big bold letters, "Brainless Babe". The camera blackens the rest of the text on the newspaper and slowly zooms in the title, then tilts upward to a black screen, carrying the title, and that would end the 2 minutes of the opening.

Situations/things I have to think of how to solve next include music rights, whether I'll end up doing the project on my own (if allowed), how to get the retro filter I'm going for which you'll see below of supermodel Bella Hadid, and more that I haven't yet encountered.

I want this to feel like your favorite Hilary Duff, Amanda Bynes, Kiera Knightly, Lindsey Lohan, and Reese Whitherspoon films; chic and real.

The Beginning

This week, I'm starting my portfolio project for Cambridge! Super excited to see what the next couple of weeks will create as April 4th (due date) approaches. My partners are Olivia Wagner and Clara De Luca. I worked with them on the marketing project, which I discussed in the previous post. I truly enjoyed working with them; sharing and collaborating with people who think alike makes projects run smoothly, as obvious as that may be. This project consists of a two minute(roughly) opening to a film, continuous blog postings, and a creative reflection.

In preparation, I am going to use all my knowledge that I've obtained from this year's lessons and projects; for instance, the Foley Project, the Marketing Project, and lessons that assessed camera shots, angles, composition, and movement. I plan on meeting with my partners very soon to discuss what we are going to go with as far as genre and any potential ideas for film openings. We are currently thinking of creating a drama or psychological thriller!  I learned a lot from watching Andrew Stanton's TED Talk!  So, we are going to go with whatever is more ideal based off what we know.

I'll check in at least four times a week! See you then :)

Welcoming Senior Trip

Hey, back again to discuss my Music Marketing Project, except I bring to you much more information than the last as it is now completed and presented!

This project has by far been one of my favorite projects I've ever been assigned. It barely felt like an assignment; it was something I could thrive in and thoroughly enjoy, rather than something I needed to do for a grade. We began this project a little before mid-January, and turned it in a week ago, within that time period, I learned several things about the music industry and the most efficient ways to market new artists, or even situations as a whole.

Last post, I explained what music marketing consisted of and gave you examples. To reiterate, music marketing is "the process of raising awareness for one's music. It's all the glory of promoting and selling a song, music video, merch; anything that entails the artist's creation." Below, you'll see a couple more artists under the pop genre:

Research:

For research, my partners and I divided sections of a music chart we were given to fill out with relevant information on modern marketing tactics for artists. With four slots to fill, we researched The Weeknd, Taylor Swift, Lil Nas X, and Beyonce. We came to discover that each artist has their unique way of marketing themselves and their work, which is how they gained their fanbase/target audience. We also researched their record labels, of course, since they are the ones planning much of their careers. Beyonce and Lil Nas are under Columbia Records, whereas The Weeknd and Taylor Swift are under Republic Records.

My partners and I worked well together on our research. We found that:

Beyonce has so much fame that not many people can do what she does. She drops albums out of the blue with no promotion done at all.  Her team does this to keep her fans on their feet! They never know what to expect.

Lil Nas X promotes himself in a very comedic way. Not only does he do the whole social media album announcements, but he plays characters. Ones that catch a lot of attention. For example, he had a fake pregnant belly and "gave birth" the day of his album release. Lil Nas X and his team follow "any publicity is good publicity."

The Weeknd promotes his album releases heavily through social media, and once they're released, he plays the album's character at every live performance. For After Hours, he played a character that portrayed the glory of plastic surgery in Hollywood.

Taylor Swift drops easter eggs. Her fanbase knows her really well as she has been in the industry for over a decade. Her life is very publicized and this allows her drop hints to the point where her fans will start trending arguments on Twitter, Instagram, and Tiktok.

Brainstorming/Planning:

As discussed in my last blog post, this process went swell. Everyone in my group has similar taste in music and we all had similar goals with this project, so it was rather easy to agree on ideas and concepts. We spent about a full week discussing ways to develop genius marketing techniques for upcoming artists and ideas for the music video. The four of us weren't available to film all together, so when most of us could, we filmed anyway. And the ones who couldn't worked on the website and presentation so productivity was high. We made a group chat to communicate ideas back and forth at all times and it was a place where we also stored information that we needed.

With the research we conducted, we used our artists marketing strategies for inspiration. We made an Instagram, Tiktok, and Twitter account to maintain a close relationship with our friends and better promote Senior Trip's songs. We also wanted to do marketing that was unique, unlike having a social media presence, we brainstormed guerilla marketing and personalized sparklers that earn you a free download of "Carry On" with your purchase. Since our band's aesthetic is starry, we figured it was clever to manufacture our own product packaging for sparklers and release the song on July 2nd as Independence Day is two days later.

Production/Post Production:

Our music video took a total of four days to film and edit. We began filming on a Tuesday after school, but with complications from work, homework, and rides, we couldn't film again until Thursday, and then finally Sunday morning for nearly 4 hours. Editing was done by one member so everything was kept in one spot/on one device. My house was available to film at any day which was relieving as our group didn't have to stress over locations. Another member of our group is in our school's TV program! I say this with excitement because she able to rent our great camera equipment so we could produce a great music video.

Once the music video was edited, we took stills from the video and posted it on our social media accounts to "hype up" our fans until the release date.

Music Video "Carry On"

Presentation:

We each split the slides on our presentation. We each had around 4 slides to complete. Of course, we would pitch in here and there and give advice to each other on ways to potentially improve marketing, display, and creativity. Ideas were flowing smoothly between the four of us. On the day we presented our marketing plan, we each presented the slides we completed, that way we would be the most confident when pitching because we knew most about that slide. If there were anything any of us felt like adding, we would speak up about it without interrupting.

Reflection:

Any publicity is great publicity as the artist is still making money from all the attention no matter the circumstance

Budgeting is very important as new artists rarely have enough money to promote themselves in ways other artists would

The more people that work together, the more communication necessary.

Use your time wisely

Be more creative and fun because that is what attracts the most people

This project already has me thinking of ideas for my Cambridge Project. On behalf of timing, I believe that starting now, even in the slightest ways, will really give me a super boost! And, I know how to research topics much better now; this will benefit my work as I'll present solid information.

Music Marketing

 Music Marketing 101

What is Music Marketing?

Music marketing is the process of raising awareness for one's music. It's all the glory of promoting and selling a song, music video, merch; anything that entails the artist's creation.

                                                                                        Assignment:

In my AICE Media class, I was given a project to complete about music marketing. We had to construct an image that would promote a new, upcoming artist(s). Every group was assigned a different genre with four different songs that they could choose one from, all by different artists (that already exist of course) and create an entirely new band or solo artist. My group was given pop music. We chose the song "Carry On" by Fun.

Pop Artists:

Rundown:

    How We Chose the Song:
After listening to every song we were given, in detail, we decided to go with "Carry On" because it was the one we envisioned reconstructing the best considering the other's didn't have the marketing potential we wanted to reach with the resources we have.

Brainstorming for the Band Name:
The song "Carry On" gave my creative group members and I the feeling of being young, free, optimistic, and real. We wanted to create a band that gave the same vibe; and that we did. Our band is called Senior Trip. I came up with the name as I was listening to different  pop artists that gave similar vibes, like Mac Miller. Senior year is meant to be enjoyed to the fullest as it the last year in high school before everyone parts their own ways. With certain obstacles, like college applications and decisions, senior year has it's ups and downs. At the end of the year, a trip is what usually brings everyone together for one last time after 9 months of hard work. These trips create the best memories and the best times; therefore, I found it fitting.

Brainstorming for the Music Video:
While the song was repeatedly playing,  we would start to see snippets of what that verse would look like if it were brought to life. "Carry On" is a song about moving forward and defeating challenges that may be in the way of success or happiness. With many hours to brew ideas, we came up with a couple great ones. We came down to one by singling out which we couldn't do given the amount of time we had and the resources at hand. We all agreed that a girl reminiscing her best friend's presence would be ideal. As she recalls all the great times, she's faced with sadness and mourn, but she soon heals and meets new people that help her move forward.

Brainstorming for Promo:
With inspiration from other artists, like The Weeknd, my group decided to create a campaign that would strike attention in "unusual" and creative ways. We made social media accounts for Senior Trip (Instagram, TikTok, Twitter) as that is the best way to gain new following in today's age. We also deeply liked the idea of guerilla marketing because that's one of the quickest attention grabbers as it is very random and it occurs in the most toured cities like LA, NYC, Miami, etc. In addition, since our theme revolves around space, we concluded that releasing the song on July 2nd, near independence day, would allow the making of custom sparkler packages to seal the theme together.

Challenges and Solutions:
Honestly, we only came across one issue so far, and it was choosing times and dates to film the music video as we are all busy individuals. We worked this out by splitting parts of the project. Three of us could meet up after school hours (so we are), however, our last group member was unable to attend so she worked on the logo and the website while we were filming, that way things were productive.

What's Next?
All we have left to do is editing for the music video and finishing the marketing presentation. We predict this will all be completed in time to review our band's image top to bottom so we can ready to begin selling.

To say the least, I thoroughly enjoyed working on this marketing project because it taught me several clever marketing tactics that I know will benefit me in the near future!!
